Episode 38: We Are the Best in Town & Why We are Completely out of Network!

  • (1:15) Story from the gym the other day
  • (2:30) Our Friday lunch date & how Jenni convinced Jake to get a third dog
  • (4:49) After lunch, Jake & Jenni went to pick up the new dog and realized it’s a bit overweight
  • (5:15) The dog is 30-40 pounds overweight to be exact but she loves Stella!
  • (6:09) We renamed her from Roxy to gipsie
  • (7:55) We’re gonna see how long it takes to knock 30 pounds off of her!
  • (8:26) Jake had a client the other day go, “Wow you guys are expensive!” & Jake’s response was, “hell yeah we are, we’re the best in town!”
  • (8:49) You aren’t going to go to the Ritz Carlton and say, “You’re expensive”
  • (9:20) This may sound cocky or arrogant but it is true, we are the best because we are actually going to listen to YOU and YOUR body, and give YOU exactly what you need
  • (9:55) We aren’t the best physical therapists in the world or the best golf performance specialists in the world, or the best health & wellness specialists in the world but we are the best at listening to YOU and figuring out what YOU need because you are not like everyone else.
  • (10:41) If Jake can’t help you, he will find someone else that can
  • (10:55) Back to the story of the lady saying we’re expensive and Jake explaining that we are the best in town
  • (11:07) Best thing Jake heard from his business mentor
  • (11:50) Why would you stay at the Ritz for $1500 a night when you could go down the street to the Holiday Inn for $150 a night?
  • (12:52) When has the cheapest ever been the best quality? NEVER!
  • (13:36) That does not mean that the most expensive is the best quality either
  • (14:27) It comes down to how much they care about you. What experience are they creating?
  • (15:09) One of the hardest parts for therapists, is putting your ego aside
  • (15:57) If the patient doesn’t feel like you understand them, then it is really hard to be successful even if you are the best manual therapist in the world. If you can’t connect with somebody, you aren’t getting them better
  • (16:08) The patient has to understand that you as the PT understand
  • (16:32) On Jenni’s side, every time they have someone new, they have to connect with their personality & lifestyle, understand their medical history and that no two paths will be the same
  • (17:00) Jake was reading that AI will remove the need for doctors and lawyers by 2030. Jake disagrees
  • (17:55) Doctoring in textbooks is black & white but when you have a patient in front of you, you have to treat the patient’s problems, NOT the symptom.. Which is why we are the best!
  • (18:28) Most doctors, physical therapists and the like are dictated on what they can do because of the medical insurance companies which is one of the biggest reasons we are out of network.
  • (18:42) We are out of network so that we can continue to treat the patient, the person and their problems and be able to dig deeper in those problems to find the bottom line. We are only able to do that because we aren’t beholden to the medical corporate system. It allows us to give you the best plan of care
  • (19:25) According to Jake, it is so ass backwards in this country, because we are one of the only countries that puts health so far down on the priority list as far as spending your money on
  • (19:40) When Jake talks to people from around the world, it blows their minds how Americans second guess, question, or don’t even consider spending their own money on preventable health care
  • (19:55) “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
  • (20:20) Americans focus so much on saving money for retirement so when you do retire you have enough money to live it out. But there is no focus on your health!
  • (20:40) What does it matter if you have a billion dollars but your health is crap? Look at Steve Jobs for example
  • (21:23) What good is your retirement money if you don’t have the health?
  • (21:56) Same goes for Jenni’s side, if you are on all sorts of medication just to get through the day so you don’t have a heart attack or your blood pressure goes through your eyeballs
  • (23:07) That’s how we come up with that saying, that we are David Vs. Goliath going against the corporate medical system
  • (23:20) The corporate medical system is geared towards treating your symptoms, it’s because of the insurance companies & big Pharma. The Pharmacology industry & insurance industry; those two things alone, account for the vast majority of health decisions made in this country on a national level
  • (25:18) We aren’t talking a lot of money to go outside the corporate medical system
  • (25:30) Jake wants to take a look at the big picture
  • (26:00) Jake’s hypothetical question – Your back is hurting so bad that it causing you not to enjoy life anymore… and you are laying there thinking to yourself, what if there was a magic pill that caused all the pain to go away, how much would you pay for that magic pill that essentially “cures you”?
  • (28:19) However much you would pay for that magic pill, that’s really how much you should invest to make yourself feel better. Especially if it is beyond deliberating pain. You have to invest in your own health and we invest that back into YOU
  • (28:54) This comes back to the big picture, what do you want to be doing or get back to doing 15 years from now? You have to invest in your own health

Dr. Jake Berman

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles. What Jake found was that back pain was by far the most debilitating pain and the highest factor leading to decreased physical activity later in life. These experiences are what inspired Jake to specialize in helping people aged 50+ keep active, mobile and pain free despite the aging process. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to alleviate somebody’s back pain so that they can get back to living their best life- especially in Naples! Over the years of helping 100’s of people aged 65-75 become stronger and pain free, one thing for sure has become apparent: “he who rests rots”. Jake is a firm believer that we become stiff then old, not old then stiff. Seriously, think about it...
